It was a term coined by music critics to refer to bands who were new on the scene and not quite creating punk rock, but still possessed the individuality and irreverence of bands in that genre. In the states, radio stations and venues began using the term new wave thinking that using punk rock would effect sales. In other countries, like Germany, the music was becoming more reliant on synthesizers, creating a sub-genre called Krautrock, which would eventually have a large impact on the music created under the genre new wave. It popularized synthesizer dance music and also created the sub-genre of synth pop. It was fun, romantic, vivacious music which was easy to dance to and appealed to the youth of the time. Take a look back for yourself here. Highly entertaining.

It was and I was in the midst of a good-natured tussle with Sting. It was backstage at the Paradise club in Boston after a scorching Police set. I got up a bit on my high horse, declaring the Police were not a punk band. Not just an angry blur or blitz, but bands considering topics rarely explored in pop music and bands that turned the beat around. New wave bands might have crawled out of pub-rock or twisted out of power pop, edged in from the synth-pop field or rock-reggae terrain. And to gin that up, the military was looking for new fresh troops. The Stranglers were there to provide a caustic counterargument to the joy of warfare by sending up its advertised glory. Yes, you, young man could have that costly piece of machinery at your disposal. Here, the seduction process takes on a pleading, sadomasochistic tone before twisting toward the rarely told truth in the title.

New Wave Album Highlights
New wave , category of popular music spanning the late s and the early s. The basic principle behind new wave was the same as that of punk—anyone can start a band—but new wave artists, influenced by the lighter side of s pop music and s fashion, were more commercially viable than their abrasive counterparts. New wave music encompassed a wide variety of styles, which often shared a quirky insouciance and sense of humour. As the mids approached, the line separating new wave from the corporate mainstream blurred, especially for bands such as the Pretenders fronted by former rock journalist Chrissie Hynde , the Police , and U2 , who became hugely popular. Although punk was pronounced dead though it later would inspire grunge and alternative , the music and fashion sensibilities of new wave continued to influence pop music through the s.
